
PERSONALITY π depressed- Quentin has suffered from depression for a long time, and he has never quite learned how to deal with it outside of living in the fantasy of the Fillory books. π avoider - When there are problems, especially emotional ones, Quentin tends to try to avoid them rather than facing them head-on. Magic has been the only thing he has never run away from, no matter how awful it gets. π intelligent - He is an intelligent person, doing well in both mundane subjects and magical ones - though he sometimes feels like a failure when it comes to magic, especially compared to others. π driven - When he sets his mind to something, Quentin is always dedicated to seeing it through to the end. π introverted - Quentin has never been one to participate in socialising, but this mainly stems from feeling like he doesn't belong anywhere. The introduction of magic to his life gave him a sense of oh, this is what I've been missing and gave him a place to belong. π shy - Quentin doesn't easily talk to others or make friends, and tends to be shy around people that he doesn't know. Though it doesn't always stop him from demanding what he wants or talking when he needs to. π friendly - Despite his shyness, he is still extremely friendly, willing to befriend others when he needs or desires to. π adventurous - Quentin loves going on adventures and discovering more about magic, and will always be happy to participate in going new places or trying new things - especially magical ones. π fearful - He worried about his time at Brakebills, his fear of flunking out pushing him to ask if Alice would mentor him due to her comprehension. Quentin expresses a desire to be Fillory's hero and savior but decides that Alice, a much more capable magician than him, should be that hero. π fantasy lover - Fantasy has always been his escape, and experiencing it in real life has made this fantasy even better. π low self esteem - Quentin does not believe in himself. Even after he saves his friends - and the world - he believes that he was not brave but had just found a way to finally kill himself.

- Magicians are capable of almost everything as long as they have the magic, spell, and hand movements for what they want to do. - Quentin's "speciality" is being a mender of small things. He was disappointed to learn this, until it helped him save the world.

A very quick(ish) tl;dr of Quentin's journey (big spoilers for the show):
Quentin was born in 1992 to his mother and Ted Coldwater in Montclair, New Jersey. At a young age, he met Julia Wicker who introduced him to the Fillory and Further series and started his love for magic. Coldwater learned sleight-of-hand magic and card tricks.
He suffered from depression and was first hospitalized at 16 until his dad brought him a copy of The World in the Walls (a Fillory book) to read until he felt better. After high school, he attended Columbia University, graduating magna cum laude with a Bachelor's in Literature.
Quentin and Julia attend an interview for Yale, but find the interviewer dead and a lost manuscript for another Fillory book. This begins their adventure into magic and Quentin's (mostly) distraction from his severe depression.
After an exam at Brakebills, a university for Magicians, Quentin passes and becomes a student there. While he is studying, he finds out that there is a man called The Beast, who a cruel dictator who wishes to murder other Magicians.
The Beast enters Brakebills in the middle of class, killing a professor and maiming Dean Fogg. The Beast directly addresses Quentin by name and moves to kill him, but Quentin unpauses time by using an enchanted pocket watch that Dean Fogg offers him, and the rest of his classmates fight back against the Beast.
Thus belongs their adventures into destroying the Beast. They find out Fillory is real, deal with a bunch of magical hijinks, and eventually Alice, one of Quentin's classmates (and his sometimes girlfriend) ingests the seed of a god in order to become strong enough to kill him. They attempt to do it a few times, fail, but some tries later they manage to defeat him. They also kill a god and get magic shut off because the other gods are angry.
Their adventure to find a way to return magic back on means that they search for 7 keys, where they have to go through various quests in order to find them. Eventually they discover that they can use the keys in a place that is at the "End of the World"<, but there is a monster worse than the Beast inside. This monster, the Nameless, is a childlike being who was discarded by the gods as a mistake.
Quentin volunteers to be his friend/keeper, however his other friends attempt to murder the Nameless. They turn magic back on when they think it is dead, but the Library (a place in another world where all knowledge is stored, including peoples' futures) interferes and puts a stopper on the magic which allows them to control how much people are able to use.
The Nameless possesses Eliot, one of Quentin's best friends. As the Nameless kills gods in order to remove their "organs" (stones that make up its sister), they attempt to find a way to destroy it. This leads them to the Mirror World, where magic must not be cast otherwise it will explode. Quentin and his friends trap the Nameless and its sister inside of some small jars and are throwing it into a mirror in the Mirror World where they will be unable to return. A Librarian attempts to stop them as he wishes to become a god, but Quentin uses his specialty - repairer of small things - to fix the mirror. But it causes the Mirror world to explode.
He dies.
